I was born and raised in Delaware, OH, the second son of a professor and a lawyer. I grew up in an academically-oriented, economically stable, emotionally safe, and loving household and was mostly a good student. I attended Wesleyan University and graduated in 2004 with a double-major in the College of Letters (interdisciplinary European studies) and French.
After graduation, I moved to Somerville, MA, and began working as a teacher at Citizen Schools, an academic afterschool program in Boston. After two years, I decided I wanted to learn Spanish and signed up for a two-month language immersion program in Xela, Guatemala. I came back and joined the Hyde Square Task Force as an afterschool program coordinator. I learned that I didn't want to be an administrator, and realized that teaching was my calling.
I joined the Boston Teacher Residency and after my residency year at the Rafael Hernández K-8 School in Roxbury, I taught middle school English for three years at the Eliot K-8 in the North End. In 2011, I moved to the Tobin K-8 in Roxbury, where I taught until December of 2013.
My ten years working with middle school students allowed me to experience a huge range of emotions. All the schools I've known show themselves as a microcosm of our society as a whole, and in my schools I was both a witness and a participant in the best and worst of what our society has to offer.
